40th Session of FAO Conference to be held from 3 to 8 July 2017 in Rome
Rome, 3 - 8 July 2017 - The 40th session of FAO Conference will be held next July. The Conference is the supreme governing body of FAO that meets in regular session every two years. Its main functions are to determine the policies of the Organization, approve the Programme of Work and Budget and make recommendations to Members and international organizations.
On the invitation of the United Nations Interim Commission on Food and Agriculture, representatives met in Quebec on 16 October 1945 to sign the Constitution of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, which provides for "a Conference of the Organization in which each Member Nation and Associate Member shall be represented by one delegate".
Conference purpose is
- to determine the policy and approve the budget of the Organization and to exercise the other powers conferred upon it by the Constitution 1,
- to make recommendations to Member Nations and Associate Members concerning questions relating to food and agriculture, in order for them to be reviewed and implemented through national action, and
- to make recommendations to any international organization regarding any matter pertaining to the purposes of the Organization (Article IV of the Constitution).
The Conference is the sovereign Governing Body of the Organization. It comprises all Members and Associate Members.
