In the context of the upcoming Rio+20 conference, Dirk Niebel, Federal Minister for Economic Cooperation and Development, commented on the report as follows: "Development policy is about our global future. Climate change mitigation and sustainable development are not matters of personal belief. They are urgent challenges if we want to attain global development that has a future and is in keeping with human rights and democratic principles. The BMZ stands for tackling and addressing these global challenges together with our partner countries. To that end, we are placing climate change mitigation, resource efficiency and innovative investment in education, health and sustainable economic systems at the very top of our development policy agenda, as these are crucial issues for the future."

The German government has continuously increased its annual commitments for the protection of ecosystems and biodiversity over the last years.
